The Ultimate Guide to Thailand Visas: Main Types and Requirements
Planning a trip, a remote work setup, or a permanent move to Thailand? Navigating the Thai visa system is your first step. Here is an updated guide to the main types of Thai visas and their basic requirements, based on official government guidelines.
1. Visa Exemption & Tourist Visa (TR)
Who is it for? Vacationers and short-term visitors.
Basic Requirements: Citizens of many countries (including the US, UK, Israel, and most of Europe) can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days. If your country is not exempt, or if you want to apply in advance, you can get a regular Tourist Visa (TR), which also grants a 60-day stay and can be extended locally for another 30 days. You need a valid passport (6 months minimum) and proof of onward travel.
2. Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) – New!
Who is it for? Digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, and individuals joining Thai cultural activities (like Muay Thai training, cooking classes, or medical treatments).
Basic Requirements: Valid for 5 years, allowing multiple entries with a stay of up to 180 days per visit. Requirements include an employment contract or portfolio for remote workers, or an acceptance letter from an authorized Thai organization (for courses/medical). You must also show a bank statement with a minimum balance of 500,000 THB.
3. Non-Immigrant B (Business & Work)
Who is it for? Expats employed by a Thai company, investors, or entrepreneurs starting a business.
Basic Requirements: An invitation or sponsorship letter from a registered Thai company, the company's registration documents, and approval from the Ministry of Labor. Once you arrive, you must obtain a Thai Work Permit to work legally.
4. Non-Immigrant O-A / O-X (Retirement)
Who is it for? Foreigners aged 50 and above who wish to retire in Thailand.
Basic Requirements: You cannot work on this visa. You must show proof of financial stability: a bank deposit in Thailand of at least 800,000 THB, or a monthly pension of at least 65,000 THB (or a combination). Valid Thai health insurance is also mandatory.
5. Non-Immigrant O (Marriage & Family)
Who is it for? Foreign spouses or dependents of Thai citizens, or dependents of foreigners working in Thailand.
Basic Requirements: A certified marriage certificate (if married to a Thai) or birth certificates for children. For a marriage visa, you must show a bank deposit of 400,000 THB or a monthly income of 40,000 THB.
6. Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa
Who is it for? High-net-worth individuals, wealthy pensioners, and highly skilled professionals.
